Tourist places of Tungurahua

Ambato

  • Providence: Its unmistakable Gothic style constitutes it in Cultural Heritage of the city. Partially destroyed in the 1949 earthquake, was restored respecting its original design.
  • Montalvo Park: It was built from 1905 in the place that occupied the Plaza Mayor or Plaza Matríz with an important contribution of Government of Eloy Alfaro. The general design of the Park was made by the architect Pedro Durini and the construction was in charge Mr. Alfonso Troya.
  • The Cathedral: The original chapel was built in 1698 when after the earthquake the city settled in that place, it was a big chozón with thatch and little by little it was growing with contributions of the priostes and the festivities until being replaced by another church in the same place where the current Cathedral is.
  • Casa de Montalvo: It is the most representative institution in the city. Located in the north corner of the Plaza Mayor and built in a site that belonged to Mrs. María López Naranjo, which was sold to Don Marcos Montalvo Oviedo, a progressive Guaneño merchant who married Doña Josefa Fiallos, parents of Don Juan Montalvo. The house that was built is today existing in the corner of Bolivar and Montalvo streets. In it, from 1927 to 1984, was the headquarters of the National Authors library and from 1988 until currently it is home to the Montalvino Museum in which valuable museum are exhibited that witness the life and work of the illustrious Ecuadorian writer Juan Montalvo.
  • Casa del Portal: Beautiful lap of colonial architecture of the XIX century, this building built in 1900, constitutes one of the fundamental elements of the historic center of Ambato. Its rooms located in front of the Montalvo Park, will be the scene of the Tungurahua Province Museum.
  • Quinta de Juan Montalvo: With an area of 1 hectare and more than 200 years old this Quinta was one of the places most loved by the "Cervantes of the Americas", where he was inspired to write some of his great works.
  • Quinta Atocha de Juan León Mera: It has a typical Spanish style, the construction dates from 1874, with an area of 5 hectares, declared National Historical Heritage. It has not only  an appeal because of its architectural structure, but also due to its wonderful botanical environment with 200 plant species between native and introduced and other endemic ones, unique in Latin America. Between the thick walls of adobe and bahareque memories are preserved, as well as manuscripts, paintings and photographs of the famous novelist Juan León Mera.  They speak of his great love for art and his homeland by bequeathing for posterity the symbol of Ecuadorian nationality, the National Anthem.
  • La Liria Botanical Garden: This area includes the properties that belonged to the families of Luis A Martínez (La Liria) and Juan León Mera (Atocha). It has an area of 14 hectares, in which conserves 200 species of vascular plants and 8 species of flora endemic to Tungurahua and the Country. The illustrious Municipality of Ambato has made the decision to protect and recover these areas by the historical content they own and for the formation of a great ecosystem, becoming the lung of the city.
  • Route of the 7 Pilahuin Pucara ponds: Cycling, camping, observation tours of beautiful landscape of native plants, can be done here.
  • Ecological Path: It is more used by people who live in the place for their agricultural work and to visit from time to time; with endemic species of the area, of landscapes with grasslands, desert that is slowly changing by the hand of man and the agriculture in the area to meet the needs of large cities.
  • Andean Landscape: In the Barrio San Pablo it is located  2.52 Kilometers away from the Central Park of the Cunchibamba Parish; in the meantime Barrio San José de Pucarumi is 2.47 kilometers away and Barrio San Rafael is 2.48 Kilometers from the aforementioned starting point.
  • Cycle Walk Family Walks: Its name originates on the Saint Patron San Vicente Ferrer and not to to the fact that there was an hacienda with such name (as it happens in others neighborhoods), of course  around them are haciendas.
  • Parochial: Colonial Church built with carved stone and worked stuck only with lime.
  • House of the Ecuadorian Culture Benjamín Carrión: a place where theatrical performances, film projections, visual arts exhibitions, community activities, among others.
  • Sanctuary of the Virgin of Transit: In the seventeenth century, the indigenous town of San Andrés, of Spanish foundation, was based in the territory where the Palahua neighborhood is today.

Cevallos

  • Train Station in Cevallos Its construction was carried out in the year 1928. You can see the architecture of the Station from the part external and makes use of the facilities and information found inside.
  • Parque de la Madre This place apart from being a tourist attraction is a great place to get distracted in the company of your family or friends, thus being a perfect place for the little ones to have fun.

Mocha

  • Mirador Pie de San Juan This site houses a large number of species of flora and fauna of the Andean region that is combined with the delicious cuisine offered in their restaurant.
  • Matrix Church of Mocha: Its interior houses artistic stained glass windows and in its altar is the image of San Juan Bautista, patron of the Mocha canton.
  • Father Gonzalo Lozada Central Park: It has great historical value, cultural and popular, located in the downtown area in the downtown area of Canton, ideal for rest and distraction.
  • Lava del Carihuayrazo Route It has a large number of attractions and natural areas where you can have contact with flora and fauna native to the place and visit each of the existing waterfalls as: Loma Verde, Calipierdra, Acorraladera and Paccha.
  • Calipiedra Waterfall Formed by two natural stone slides, provides two waterfalls of approximately 7 meters high, it feeds the Olalla River.

Patate

  • San Borja Lagoons It is a natural site with exceptional panoramic views of the main mountain systems and elevations of the Andes mountain range, including the volcanoes:  TungurahuaChimborazoCotopaxi and Carihuayrazo..
  • Sudahua Lagoons These are lagoons that are located at the top of the moor the Sucre, visit them and discover how wonderful they are next to the great nature that surrounds them.
  • Mundug Waterfall
  • Simón Bolívar Central Park It has an important population of plant species such as trees and flowers native to the area and with an impressive amount of birdlife.
  • Soria Passage In this place you will appreciate the work of the Lord Geovanny Mosquera, local artist, who embodies his work the experiences of the ancient and contemporary Patate, its attractions tourist, gastronomy, festivals among others.
  • Lord of the Earthquake Religious and Archaeological Museum This site saves the history and archaeological remains of the Panzaleo culture and Puruhá.

Pelileo

  • Llikakama Artisan Market In this place you can observe the elaboration process and acquire handwoven crafts of cabuya, sheep wool, alpaca or acrylic fabrics. Fabrics made in hand loom and other crafts can also be found.
  • Salasaca Art Square The Salasaka people have traditionally been dedicated to the elaboration of handicrafts with sheep wool thread and alpaca with which striking tapestries, full of color, are left by hand and arts, in addition to ponchos, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, among others, which are exposed and offered in the Plaza del Arte Salasaca located in the center of the community.
  • Cerro Nitón One of the most prominent tourist attractions of Pelileo, frequently visited by tourists who want to live an adrenaline experience.
